Sorting Christmas waste

During Christmas time we generate even more waste than usually and most of it can be recycled. Below you will find some useful tips on how to reduce waste and recycle more. THANK YOU FOR SORTING AND RECYCLING ALSO DURING CHRISTMAS TIME!

  • Put ham grease in a tight container and then to the mixed waste inlet. Grease should not be poured down the sink or into the toilet, because it can clog the pipes.
  • Food waste belongs to the biowaste inlet, not in the toilet.
  • Dispose of stearin, candle remnants, and glass candle holders in mixed waste.
  • Place the chocolate box in cardboard recycling, plastic wrappers and the plastic tray in plastic packaging recycling. Aluminum wrappers that stay crumpled when squeezed should be sorted into metal recycling.
  • Wrapping paper is mixed waste. It does not qualify as paper or cardboard for recycling purposes.
  • Aluminum foils and tea light candle shells belong to the metal section of the recycling room.
  • Broken LED candles and light sets belong to electrical waste collection
  • New Year’s lead tin is hazardous waste. Tin is collected free of charge in HSY hazardous waste containers and Sortti-stations, or you can use it again next new year.
  • Flatten cardboard boxes before placing them in the trolley (in the Recycling room).

Old Christmas trees will be collected 1-2 times per week during January. See more from the separete bulletin!

Waste bins will not be emptied on Christmas, so collections may happen a day earlier or later than usual, including on weekends. Keep packaging waste at home for a while if the bins are full!
